On the first-generation C70, the tonneau motor assembly is the common failure. This is the motor that drives the rear tonneau cover — the panel that has to lift out of the way before the folded top can drop into its well. When it fails, the top sequence stops before it really starts: the roof unlatches, the tonneau doesn't move, and the whole operation aborts.

It's often misdiagnosed as a failed roof pump, because the visible symptom is simply "the top won't go down." Listening for which motor runs and which stays silent is the quickest way to tell them apart before spending money on the wrong part.

The 1998-2005 C70 convertible is mechanically distinct from the 2006-2013 retractable hardtop that replaced it — parts do not carry over. Confirm your generation before ordering.
