How to tell it's the pump

The clearest sign is sound without motion: you hear the pump spin up but the roof either doesn't move or crawls. A pump that's weakening will often work fine on a warm day and fail on a cold one, or complete the cycle once and refuse a second time until it's rested. If the roof isn't moving and the pump is silent, the fault is more likely electrical or a switch — worth diagnosing before spending on hydraulics.

Important on fitment

E93 components are not interchangeable with earlier BMW convertibles. An E46 pump will not work here, and neither will an E36 unit — the chassis, the roof mechanism and the hydraulics are all different. Confirm you have an E93 (2007–2013 3-Series convertible) before ordering.
