What failure looks like

It starts subtle. The handle takes more force than it used to, or feels notchy through its travel. Then wind noise appears around the top of the windshield at highway speed. Then water in heavy rain. By the time the latch won't hold at all, most owners have been living with the noise for a season or two and blaming the seals.

If your weatherstripping looks sound and the leak is specifically at the top corners of the windshield rather than along the sides, the latch is the more likely culprit.

The E36 convertible is now a thirty-year-old car and factory latch assemblies are long out of production. Aftermarket reproductions for a mechanism this specific are either unavailable or poor. A salvage-sourced original from a car that was working is usually the only sensible option.
