How to tell it's the amplifier

The clearest sign is a fault that hits the whole system at once rather than one speaker. Common patterns are audio cutting out entirely then returning after a restart, distortion that's present at every volume level, or a bank of speakers going silent together. Heat makes it worse, so a system that works when cold and fades after half an hour is a strong indicator.

If only one speaker is dead, check the speaker before condemning the amp.
