How this one fails

It's a gradual decline rather than a sudden death. First the top takes noticeably longer than it used to. Then it starts stopping partway and needing a second attempt. Then it quits — often with the pump still clearly audible, which is the giveaway that the motor is turning but no longer building usable pressure.

Before you order, one thing worth checking. This system runs six hydraulic cylinders off a single pump. If your top is dropping unevenly, sagging on one side, or you can see hydraulic fluid staining in the rear quarter panels, you likely have a leaking cylinder as well as — or instead of — a tired pump. A new pump won't fix a leaking cylinder. Diagnose which one you're dealing with before spending money either way.
